In Within the Continuum, Portland sculptor Christopher Belluschi explores the enduring relationship between material, form, and the human impulse to shape the world around us. Working in wood and stone through the traditional method of direct carving, Belluschi draws from sculptural lineages that stretch back centuries while engaging ideas rooted firmly in the present. His work navigates the space between abstraction and figuration, allowing organic curves, shifting planes, and subtle gestures to suggest forms that feel both familiar and newly discovered.

Belluschi’s sculptures reveal a dialogue between the natural character of each material and the artist’s quiet, intentional interventions. Indoors, carved wood and stone works invite close looking, where surface, weight, and contour hold emotional and tactile resonance. Outdoors, the exhibition extends into the garden with three large travertine sculptures designed specifically for the site. Illuminated at night, these pieces transform the space into a contemplative environment, highlighting Belluschi’s interest in how art lives in relation to landscape, light, and time.

A Portland native, Belluschi studied Studio Art at Whitman College before expanding his practice through travel, continued study, and an apprenticeship under sculptor M. J. Anderson. His ongoing work in Carrara, Italy — a historic center of marble carving — deepens his engagement with material tradition and craft. Belluschi’s sculptures reflect a commitment to precision, restraint, and the belief that form emerges most powerfully when the material itself is allowed to speak.
