The project

Stewardship, not just restoration.

Oaks Park invited us to guide their Dance Pavilion into its next chapter, and we treated the work as stewardship. Built in 1905 and restored in 2025, this Portland landmark has hosted generations of celebrations, so the goal was never to make it feel new — it was to reveal what had been hidden. We removed a dated drop ceiling to bring back the original wood ceiling and trusses, preserved the historic windows and the signature dancehall floor markings, then made the building work for modern events: a new covered entry, upgraded restrooms and commissary kitchen, a new accessibility ramp, and updated lighting and infrastructure throughout.

The thinking

Uncover what was already there

Removing a dated drop ceiling brought back the original wood ceiling and trusses — volume, warmth, and craftsmanship that had simply been hidden for years, not missing.

Protect what makes it historic

The original windows and the signature dancehall floor markings stayed exactly as they were, so the building's own story is still visible underfoot.

Make it work for a modern event

A new covered entry, upgraded restrooms and kitchen, an accessible front ramp, and updated lighting and infrastructure let the Pavilion host anything from a wedding to a fundraiser without asking guests to rough it.
